About Nanome: Preamble 

A) The Greek word for dwarf is “Nano.” The first mention of some of the distinguishing concepts in nanotechnology (but predating use of that name) was in 1867 by James Clerk Maxwell, when he proposed a tiny entity known as Maxwell’s Demon, able to handle individual molecules, as a thought experiment. The first observations and size measurements of nano-particles were made during the first decade of the twentieth century. They are mostly associated with Richard Adolf Zsigmondy, who made a detailed study of gold sols and other nanomaterials, with sizes as low as 10 nm and less. B) R. L. Brahmachary worked with Arunava Goswami in ISI on natural nanoparticles present in sap of plants. The result showed that most of the particles present in the sap are of 4-14 nm in size. About Nanome

  • Cells of agriculturally important crops (Tulshi, rice, wheat etc.) and animals (Cow, buffalo, goat etc.) contain DNA, RNA, protein (including prion), carbohydrates, lipid, metals, metal salts, metal oxides etc. In Genome Projects of microbes, plant, animal and humans, scientists worked on mainly genetic materials (i.e. DNA, RNA, protein etc.). But what should be the next logical step? The answer is- Nanome project.
  • All cells are micro-meter (mM) in size. So, you cannot pack any object which are in the micro-meter range inside the cell. Be it DNA or organelle- they are either in colloid range (>100 nm) or in the nano-meter range (1-nm to 100 nm). So, we can define Nanome as the entire collection of natural nanoparticles present inside the cells of plants and veterinary animals.
  • Another hallmark of Human Genome project that it started with Basic Research mode. In INPCPVA (International Nanome project) we will start with Applied and Translational Research mode.
